Nasal polyps are soft, painless, noncancerous growths that develop on the lining of nasal passages or sinuses due to long-term inflammation. They are often linked to chronic sinusitis, allergies, asthma, or immune-related conditions. These grape-like swellings can cause nasal blockage, breathing difficulty, loss of smell, facial pressure, and recurrent infections. Nasal polyps can affect one or both sides of the nose and tend to recur if the underlying inflammation isn’t controlled.
Treatment
The goal of nasal polyp treatment is to reduce inflammation, relieve symptoms, and prevent recurrence. Mild cases are managed with nasal corticosteroid sprays, such as fluticasone or mometasone, which help shrink polyps and ease congestion. For larger or persistent polyps, doctors may prescribe short courses of oral or injectable steroids. Antihistamines and leukotriene modifiers are used if allergies or asthma contribute to inflammation. Saline nasal irrigation helps clear mucus and keep the passages moist. In severe or recurring cases, endoscopic sinus surgery is performed to remove polyps and open sinus pathways. Ongoing medical therapy and regular check-ups help prevent regrowth.
